Behind the Snow Effect at Giverny – Monet (1893)

By Jenn Mercer

There is no reason to whiten
the brush, to brush on white
canvas, white
gloss drying on white
stars drifting
without reason;
the drifts of freezing snow
falling mute.
There is no reason
for this but the dusky green
of buried trees, the grey
smudge of fence posts,
the blue absence,
and the silent
need to fall.
